Window Boxes in Historic Houses Facelift
Jan 27, 2009
Iron and Stone Garden Products Ltd (Period Window Boxes) have been proud to play a role in the newly completed regeneration of 70 Victorian terraced cottages in Knutton, Staffordshire.
Part of £1.7 million refurbishment project, funded by Renew North Staffordshire, Newcastle Borough Council and English Heritage, this renovation has helped to uplift the area and raise property values.
The area was identified as in need of support by the Knuton and Cross Heath Masterplan after extensive consultation in 2005 and 2006 because of the poor condition and low property values of some of its older properties.
The facades of the houses, which were originally built for workers at the nearby Chesterton brickworks, coal mines and forges, have been renovated to a high standard. Much of the original brickwork and tiles have been restored using local materials and local contractors where possible. Chimney pots, doors and windows have been replaced and other original features such as bootscrapers renovated. Some of the houses have also been provided new rear alleyway boundary walls and gates.
Due to popular demand for window boxes from the residents of the externally, newly refurbished houses, Iron and Stone Garden Products Ltd (Period Window Boxes) were able to provide fifteen Victorian style window boxes for a number of houses in Gordon Street and Cemetery Road. This window box scheme was funded by Aspire Housing and the Knutton and Cross Heath Neighbourhood Management Pathfinder Community Action Scheme. "We are hoping to add a splash of colour all year round," said Julia Shea, the Chair of the Alleygate (Housing) Association.
Robin Studd, of the Newcastle Borough Council and portfolio holder for neighbourhoods and regeneration, said of the project: "By restoring the character and identity of these very distinctive architectural features, we have helped to significantly improve the quality of the environment in Knutton.
